Kiln Shots…

Wow… first comment! Amy, you win the prize!

Here are some pictures of my kiln. The first is of the kiln itself the first time I fired some glass in it. The second is a picture of the glass as I was firing it. The second picture isn’t too good, I’m afraid, but I was lying on the floor trying to take a picture through a tiny peep hole (you can see the cover for it on the front of the kiln).

One of the fun things you can probably appreciate from these pictures is what it is like to “flash vent” the kiln. That’s when you have to rapidly cool the glass down enough so it won’t crystallize after it has been fused. You do it by opening the lid while the glass is still red-hot. You can see by the placement of the handle that I kind of need to wear fire resistant gloves and use a hook. It’s just a little warm in there.

Oooohhhh….the second picture is like the inside of a miniature sun. Or the fires of hell, depending on your mood. Or kind of like a really hot place where even glass melts.

Is it just me, or does the lid of the kiln have a sideways drawing of a man with his arms raised over his head, probably because he’s screaming, “No, no! Don’t throw me in the kiln!”?

Great, now every time I fuse something, I’m going to think of “Mr. Bill.” Thanks, Amy!

The glass dish is absolutely beautiful! However, I feel I’ve found a kindred spirit in Amy. My first thought was that I loved that “fires of hell” photo, but was holding back because I thought it might be overshare and too revealing of my attitude lately. I am at work right now, you know.

    Oh, wait… damnit!
