My father likes kaleidoscopes and has actually made a few. I thought it might be interesting to try to make some objective disks for them. Here are my first two tries.

There isn’t too much to say about these. Both pieces are about 3 inches in diameter. The base is Bullseye’s Tekta. For the first objective, I bent some stringer in a candle flame and then tossed some various frit (bits of broken glass) on top. For the second objective, I used stringer, a little bit of frit, and some small shards of dichroic glass. Dichroic glass has a thin film coating on top that changes color depending upon the viewing angle.
Incidentally, while I like the first one best, the pictures really don’t do the second one any justice. Dichroic glass really needs to be moving for you to see it to full effect.

Those are neat. I would think the dichroic glass would work very well in a kaleidoscope.
Thanks. The dichroic stuff is fun. I saw a panel many years ago that was made almost entirely from dichroic pieces, and it had me mesmerized for a while. Unfortunately, the prices also had me mesmerized. Dichroic glass is just a little on the pricy side.
A couple more kaleidoscope objectives are “in the oven” right now, so I’ll be posting pictures in another day or two.
